Why Do I Need Math? I Make Jewelry!

I was never a math girl. I wasn't necessarily a poor math student - I just didn’t have that little math-lights-me-up sparkle that some students had.

I thought I’d left math long behind, but here I am with my own jewelry business and doing . . . math! This is a sampling of math I must do within my daily business:

  • Count out pearls to stitch
  • Count again to check that number is correct
  • Count to middle of pearl cord to attach pendant
  • Count both sides to be sure pendant is centered
  • Calculate number of supplies needed
  • Calculate cost of supplies needed
  • Calculate cost of supplies and labor to plan prices
  • Calculate profits or losses
  • Taxes

On and on it goes! So if you know some young people who think they’re choosing a career that won’t involve math skills . . . well, maybe just don't tell them!
